The Saint Louis Zoo may want to stock up on king-size containers of pickles and ice cream. Jade, an Asian Elephant is pregnant. The 17-year-old mother-to-be is due to give birth at the end of this year or in early 2025. In this video from the zoo from October 24, 2024, you can see the baby elephant give a kick from inside Jade. The elephant care team and the animal health team at the zoo have been keeping a close watch on Jade, by making sure she's getting enough exercise and the proper nutrients. A female elephant's gestation period is around 22 months. Newborn elephants typically weigh around 300 pounds. The gender of Jade's baby has not been confirmed.
