April 14 on The Story: Since the site first opened in June 2022, a Portland nonprofit has operated the Multnomah Safe Rest Village in Southwest Portland — among the city's first successful examples for the shelter pod model. But the contracts for this site and others have been handled by the county, not the city. That's supposed to change July 1 — and the nonprofit that runs this site, Sunstone Way, just found out that the city will be kicking them to the curb. According to them, the city hasn't given a clear reason why, and the result could be layoffs for their 30 staff members at the site, plus the added instability of someone new stepping in.
