April 9 on The Story: As Multnomah County looks to tighten its belt in the face of looming budget gaps, Chair Jessica Vega Pederson has asked departments to prepare for cuts. According to District Attorney Nathan Vasquez, his office was told to draw up a proposal with a 3% reduction. But he says the cuts would have an adverse impact on public safety — and if anything, he wants a $5 million investment from the county so the DA's office can expand. Meanwhile, a Portland attorney is trying to build support for a ballot measure that would both impact the county budget and potentially have ramifications for the approach to public safety.
