April 4 on The Story: If you've been following The Story for the past year or two, then you know that ODOT has been sounding the alarm about a lack of stable funding to continue road maintenance and improvements into the future. Even in the short-term, they're already in trouble. With the legislature in session, a major transportation funding package was practically inevitable — and now we're getting our first look at how Oregonians may have to pay for it. In short, it's a little bit of everything: higher gas taxes, higher vehicle registration and title fees, higher payroll taxes, a new tire tax, a tax on car purchases, and a pay-per-mile fee for electric and more fuel-efficient vehicles. It's just a first draft, but it's one that would impact just about everybody.
