Feb. 21 on The Story: For the last few years, efforts to build a replacement for the I-5 bridge linking Portland and Vancouver seem to have been gathering steam. Organizers have identified three main sources of funding in order to bankroll the project, expected to cost at least $6 billion: funds from the legislatures of Oregon and Washington, tolling on both the old bridge and the new, and some significant federal grants. The state funds have already been allocated, and the project won several federal grants within the last year. But the Trump administration's attempts to freeze or roll back a number of Biden-era policies has suddenly thrown the Interstate Bridge Replacement project into uncertainty.
