Feb. 10 on The Story: Around the time he took office at the beginning of this year, Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez made some comments that didn't win him any fans on the other side of the courtroom. In an interview with OPB, Vasquez said that he doesn't think there's a public defender crisis caused by a shortage of attorneys, at least not in Multnomah County. Instead, he said he considers it a "work stoppage" — a deliberate slowdown. Public defenders, especially the ones working for nonprofits, beg to differ, and the state of Oregon has certainly been treating it as a shortage.
