Jan. 14 on The Story: Since July 2024, the city of Portland has ostensibly been enforcing its latest prohibited camping ordinance, up to and including arrest for individuals who are offered available shelter and refuse to take it. Violations could result in fines and jail time. But according to city data, fewer than 10 people have been arrested under this ordinance since enforcement began — in fact, there have only been three such arrests recorded. Tonight, we're speaking with some people who want to see that enforcement stepped up, and others who believe it's an unnecessarily harsh treatment for an already vulnerable group.
