Dec. 12 on The Story: Last July, after months of delays, the city of Portland opened its first homeless shelter site for people living in vehicles on the street. The Sunderland RV Safe Park took a while to hit full capacity, but it eventually became a lifeline for some, housing about 70 people at a time. But in March, less than two years after it opened, the city is shutting the site down — and it's unclear where the Sunderland residents are going to go. The reason? The site used to be a maintenance lot for PBOT, and they now need it back.
