Description
Oct. 30 on The Story: A single mother with three young kids, Shawayne Hodges found a house she could afford in Vancouver with the help of Section 8 housing vouchers. But when her landlord tried to hike the rent and was rebuffed by the local housing authority, Hodges said they started in with the fees. Yellow grass cost her $125, and it was another $125 for the fee notice being posted on her door. That was just the tip of the iceberg — she eventually owed them $3,200 in fees alone. She eventually not only moved out of the home, she left Washington. Her attorney thinks it was a strategy to force her out, one that Washington landlords are using more and more because there's no law against it.
