Aug. 15 on The Story: For several years now, KGW has been reporting on the issue of civil commitment in Oregon, which is the process through which someone can be forced into state custody to receive mental health care. It's a process now all but abandoned in the state, as high legal standards, capacity issues at the Oregon State Hospital and a web of court orders force the state to prioritize "aid and assist" patients who enter psychiatric custody after committing a crime. Now, a workgroup from a mental health advocacy organization has come forward with some modest recommended changes to state law that would make it easier for patients to be civilly committed, representing one of the first significant steps toward a change.
