May 27 on The Story: Right now, the folks planning to build a new I-5 bridge connecting Portland and Vancouver still expect to start construction in 2026. In the meantime, the Interstate Bridge Replacement project is plodding through the federal environmental review process. But anxiously awaiting the outcome of that process are dozens of residents and business owners, some of whom suspect — and not without evidence — that their homes and buildings will be bulldozed to make way for the expanded bridge and its new complement of interchanges. The IBR team isn't ready to share what land it will be grabbing up through eminent domain, because their proposal hinges on completion of the federal review.
