Description
May 9 on The Story: In spring of last year, Kristen Emerson arrived at a MAX station in Hillsboro as she was heading home from a meeting. A 19-year-old man, Jacob Ponse, was there waiting when she arrived. TriMet surveillance video captured how Ponse followed and later sexually assaulted Emerson, prompting her to call police, who took Ponse into custody. A year later, just before the case was set to go to trial, Ponse decided to plead guilty to two sex abuse charges. Despite the fact that there was no plea deal agreed to by prosecutors, the judge in the case decided to bump the one felony charge down to a misdemeanor — letting Ponse off with a lighter sentence and without a felony on his record. As Emerson recently told The Story's Pat Dooris, the outcome of the case left her in shock, and as if she hadn't been heard.
