April 30 on The Story: On Monday, pro-Palestinian protesters occupied the Millar Library at Portland State University and refused demands from school administration that they vacate the building. That prompted a press conference late that evening, featuring city, county and school officials. PSU President Ann Cudd said she'd asked the Portland Police Bureau to step in. Also at the podium was Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt, who said that his office is prepared to prosecute arrested protesters if there is enough evidence of a crime, making special note of potential felonies. It's a sensitive subject for Schmidt's 2024 reelection campaign, when he receives criticism to this day for dismissing non-violent charges during the 2020 protests and riots in Portland that roiled the city near-nightly for months.
