Description
Dec. 4 on The Story: If and when construction gets going on a new set of I-5 bridges over the Columbia River, it won't just transform the crossing itself. The project could entail major overhauls for a total of seven interchanges in North Portland and Vancouver — accounting for as much as half of the project's anticipated $6 billion price tag. The designers behind the project say they have a good reason for spending so much money and time on the interchanges, however: Because the interchanges are so close together right now, they contribute to the congestion that so often plagues the I-5 crossing. As a result, they're trying to do whatever they can to space them out and make the vital stretch of freeway function smoothly.
