Oct. 13 on The Story: Over the last few years, a bare patch of land at the base of the Steel Bridge in Portland's Old Town has become a makeshift neighborhood for homeless people, best known as "The Pit." But this week, the city began a major crackdown on the site, clearing out homeless residents and debris. The way things usually go, a prime spot like this would be bare for a few days before people start to trickle back in. But this time, at least for now, that doesn't seem to be the case for The Pit, and for a few key reasons.
