July 27, 2023 on The Story: Along the windswept bluffs of the eastern Columbia River Gorge, citizens of the Yakama Nation find themselves pitted against a proposed hydroelectric project that would reshape some of their ancestral lands. Proponents of the project see it as a vital addition to the Pacific Northwest's green energy grid, one that will fill the gaps between solar and wind power. But for the Yakama Nation, it's yet another erosion of their rights to access sacred sites in lands that were once theirs. Right now there doesn't seem to be any compromise that both sides will support.
