Description
It’s one of the most popular spots in the gorge, the Eagle Creek Recreation Area. Parking is usually pretty hard to come by unless you arrive early in the morning, and it was even more difficult with an influx of hikers with the day off of school or work. Jon Goodwin spoke with several people hiking the 2 miles or so to Punchbowl Falls. At Lower Punchbowl Falls, hikers stopped for lunch or got in the water to cool off. Sam Smith, of Portland, visited with his wife, mother-in-law and son who was home from college. “Walking right next to the water, the sound of the water, the inlets to walk off and wade in a little bit. On a hot day it’s nice to cool your feet,” Smith said.
Always remember to bring proper equipment and footwear no matter where you hike, and give extra attention to the Eagle Creek Trail. Hazards still exist after the 2017 wildfire, so make sure to practice good judgement and stay on marked trails.
