May 25, 2023 on The Story: Last September, ten people with disabilities sued the city of Portland, arguing that it was violating the Americans with Disabilities Act by allowing homeless camps to block sidewalks throughout the city. Just before Mayor Ted Wheeler's office detailed his proposal for a daytime camping ban on city property Thursday, the plaintiffs in that ADA case announced that they've reached a settlement with the city. While the settlement still needs sign-off from the city council, we'll detail what that settlement requires — namely, what Portland will be on the hook for when it comes to dealing with homeless camps.
