Description
May 23, 2023 on The Story: John Salazar lives in Happy Valley, employed by the state as a family caregiver for his disabled brother. Out of nowhere, he says, debt collectors emptied his bank account one day — leaving him and his brother struggling to stay afloat. Court documents show that this all started with some unpaid medical debt from over a decade ago, which had almost tripled in size in the hands of debt collectors. His case highlights Oregon's lack of protections for people at risk of having debt collectors seize their bank accounts, wages and belongings.
