May 4, 2023 on The Story: This week, Republican senators in Salem once again walked out to grind legislative business to a halt. But this time they did something new to justify the whole affair, digging up an obscure 1979 law that requires bill summaries to be readable at an 8th-grade level. Even though it's clear that they're targeting a particular reproductive rights bill passed by Democrats in the House, they're hinging their public arguments on readability. But as it turns out, it isn't just the Democrats' bill that fails the standard — it's almost every bill, including the ones that Republicans like.
