April 13, 2023 on The Story: Over the past few months, The Story has done multiple reports on the Oregon Department of Transportation's plan to begin tolling parts of local interstates. Because of the nature of the beast, many of the voices that we've heard on tolling have been negative — skeptical of the need for tolls and pessimistic about the outcomes. So we're taking a step back and talking to someone who is happy to talk about the benefits of tolling, the head of ODOT's Urban Mobility Office. In his telling, tolling is something that's been tried and found to be effective in many parts of the U.S., and will pay dividends by reducing congestion and increasing infrastructure safety for years to come.
