March 3, 2023 on The Story: Shoplifting has become a huge problem for Portland retailers, but it doesn't stop at the city limits. At the Washington Square Mall, an independent consignment shop will be moving out after a rash of shoplifting — the kind that larger retailers can absorb, for a time, but small businesses can't afford to weather. According to loss prevention specialists, thieves are often reselling items in digital marketplaces, where online shoppers looking for a deal may not be aware that they're looking at stolen goods.
