Jan. 12, 2022 on The Story: If you haven't heard of Damon Coates, it's likely because his story has been so long in the making. A former Clackamas County deputy and public information officer, Coates was shot in the face 20 years ago Monday by a 15-year-old boy in the midst of a mental health crisis. Coates suffered partial paralysis as a result, and lost the ability to speak. However, Coates survived. He survives to this day, long enough to see the teen who shot him, now a man, get released from psychiatric custody — incidentally, on the 20th anniversary of the shooting. Tonight, we catch up with Coates' family.
