Description
Columbia Dance Studio’s director Becky Moore is staging a performance of "The Nutcracker" ballet replete with Vancouver, Wash. history.
"Mice and soldiers come to life and they battle. Ours is beavers and fur trappers. Because in the 1840s, that's why people were in Vancouver," Moore said.
Costume designer Christine Darch specializes in ballet costuming, and she's bringing that vision to life.
"They have a bolero jacket and it has the beaver tail. Sparkly beaver teeth," Darch said. "Everything belongs to some kind of local lore "
75 kids make up the cast. In addition to the beavers and trappers, the kids appear as dancing Wapato flowering plants, salmon and water-sprites.
"The nutcracker is 130 years old. but, as the years have gone by, people adapt it," Moore said.
The Northwest Nutcracker shows five times this weekend in the Skyview High School Concert Hall.
