Dec. 14, 2022 on The Story: On Tuesday, Governor Kate Brown announced that she will commute the sentences of 17 offenders on death row to life in prison without the possibility of parole. A number of people and organizations celebrated the move — and it's not as if Oregon has executed anyone lately, nor is it likely that any of these prisoners would have been executed soon. But critics skewered Brown for not consulting the families of victims, some of whom have taken solace in the fact that these offenders might someday be put to death. Tonight we take a closer look at the death penalty and the response to Brown's announcement.
