Nov. 29, 2022 on The Story: For the last few weeks, we've been digging into the phenomenon of rampant shoplifting in the Portland metro area. We've already seen how this crime is dealt with by county district attorneys, but today we're shifting our gaze to county sheriff's offices, which determine jail policies. We found that both Multnomah and Clark counties tend not to book people accused of shoplifting into jail at all, which differs from Washington and Clackamas counties — and this difference in policy might determine how active serial offenders are in each area.
