Description
People’s Food Co-op in Southeast Portland is one of three businesses selected nationwide for Fairtrade America’s mural campaign.
The non-profit works for ethical farming practices like fair wages and equitable trading.
Portland painter and muralist Alex Chiu is working on a mural on the outside of the co-op. The painting is of Deborah Osei-Mensah, a cocoa farmer from Ghana who is committed to fair trade. The cocoa she harvests is used to make Tony’s Chocolonely chocolate bars, available at People’s Food Co-op.
“I liked the aspect of connecting people who are buying food with who it's made by and where it's coming from, and to bring a little bit of awareness as to who's making our food and how that process works. So I was happy to be a part of the project,” said Chiu.
The mural will be unveiled at a weekly farmers’ market on Wednesday, October 5.
