Monkeypox, a relative of the smallpox virus, doesn't spread as easily as we're now accustomed to with COVID-19. It's also not commonly fatal. But it's extremely painful and unpleasant to contract — and the slow public health response means that it could be circulating in our communities for months, if not years.
