The flight, AA1006, was scheduled from Colorado Springs to Dallas-Fort Worth. The plane left the Colorado Springs airport at 4:37 p.m. before being diverted to Denver, according to FlightAware.
An American Airlines spokesperson said the plane, a Boeing 737-800, "experienced an engine-related issue."
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane landed at DIA at around 5:15 p.m. after the crew reported engine vibrations. An engine caught fire after landing, while taxiing to the gate.
The passengers on board were evacuated and a spokesperson for the airport said that the air slides were deployed. There were 172 passengers and six crew members on the plane.
Twelve people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, an airport spokesperson said.
A video from inside the airport shows smoke pouring from the plane and people standing on the airplane's wing.
