Description
A now 14-year-old boy who was seven when he was abducted by his non-custodial mother in 2017 was found in Douglas County after deputies responded to a possible burglary late last month, according to the sheriff's office.
The agency responded to a trespassing call just before 4 p.m. on Feb. 23 at a home on Kelliwood Way in Highlands Ranch. The home was vacant and for sale, but the owner was monitoring it with security cameras and reported "suspicious activity" to the sheriff's office.
Deputies went to the home and contacted two children who were inside a vehicle in the driveway.
While deputies were there, a man and woman exited the home and claimed they were associated with the realtor. However, the sheriff's office said their story "began to unravel" as deputies worked for "hours" to verify their identities.
The woman was finally identified as 40-year-old Rabia Khalid, who had an active warrant for kidnapping. Deputies also determined that the 14-year-old boy who was in the vehicle was the victim in that case.
Investigators determined that Khalid, who was the boy's non-custodial parent, took the boy from Atlanta on Nov. 27, 2017. A warrant was issued for her arrest.
