Steve Epstein had three true crime books under his belt when he decided he wanted to write a novel, but soon found he was – in his words – “getting absolutely nowhere with it.”
“So, I decided to think outside the box and look for a true crime that was a little bit different than what I had written about,” Epstein, an attorney in Raleigh, N.C., told 9NEWS.
As it happened, while he was seeking inspiration, he judged a mock trial about an art heist.
“Maybe,” he thought, “there’s a good bank heist that’s a great story that no one’s ever told – or told well.”
After a couple of internet searches, he landed on a page about a crime known as the Father’s Day Massacre in Denver – the June 16, 1991, slayings of four United Bank guards by a mustachioed robber in a fedora and sunglasses who walked out with $200,000 in cash.
