Description
Heat is tough on gardens and gardeners. It's not a surprise that it's hot this time of year. But if you planned for it, planted the right kind of annuals, and maintained them, you should have a great display. If not, pay attention to this list for next summer.
These plants perform well in the heat, either in pots or in the ground: Dahlias, 'Bubblegum' petunia, sweet potato, tall ageratum, zinnias, marigolds, lantana, creeping zinnia (Sanvitalia), cannas, tall verbena, celosia, Oriental lilies, plectranthus, purple heart setcreasea and coleus.
As always during hot, dry spells, make sure to water in the morning or evening--not during the heat of the day. Even these heat-loving plants are susceptible to damage if they're not watered thoroughly.
