One of America's largest retailers will stop accepting personal checks for payment later this month. Minnesota-based Target said it will "no longer accept personal checks starting July 15" citing "extremely low volumes." "Target is committed to creating an easy and convenient checkout experience, and that includes providing our guests with numerous ways to pay," a Target spokesperson said in a statement. The rate of personal check usage has fallen considerably in recent years, with a 2023 study by GoBankingRates.com finding 46% of Americans never wrote a single check last year. Target said customers can continue to pay for purchases by cash, credit and debit cards, Target Circle cards, digital wallets, SNAP/EBT, and pay later services. "We have taken several measures to notify guests in advance to aid an easy and efficient checkout experience," the Target spokesperson said. The change will take place after the retailer's upcoming annual Target Circle week sale from July 7-13. The move to stop accepting personal checks is the latest change at checkout for Target. In March, the company switched its self-checkout lanes to an "express" format in most of its stores, limiting customers to 10 items or less. Target said it planned to open more traditional staffed checkout lanes for guests.
