Description
A 12-year-old is being treated at the hospital after being hit by a car Friday morning on State Road 60 in Lake Wales.
The child was attempting to cross the road at the intersection of 3rd Street once traffic had stopped in both directions, the Lake Wales Police Department said in a news release. Then, the driver of a Buick reportedly ran that red light before slamming into the 12-year-old.
The Buick was traveling at a speed of 47 miles per hour before the impact, police said. The driver did stop and remained on scene when officers arrived.
The child was flown to an area trauma center for "immediate treatment." At this time, an investigation is underway to gather more information about the incident.
"This crash highlights the importance of paying attention while operating a vehicle and always obeying traffic control devices and signals," officers stated. "Coincidentally, today at 2:00 pm, proposals for red light and school zone speed enforcement cameras will be opened as the Lake Wales moves forward with implementing these programs within the city.
