The 2025 Firestone Grand Prix has kicked off in downtown St. Petersburg, drawing over 100,000 fans to the waterfront streets for the opening race of the IndyCar season.
Local leaders view the event as a vital opportunity to showcase the city’s recovery from the devastating 2024 hurricane season while delivering a significant economic boost.
“This is the image that I think will convey to the nation,” said St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch, emphasizing the importance of highlighting the city’s vibrant downtown and waterfront amenities.
The race, which is broadcasted to more than 200 countries, offers global exposure to a city eager to replace memories of storm damage with scenes of resilience and vitality.
The Grand Prix is expected to generate over $60 million in economic impact, providing a much-needed lift for local businesses still recovering from hurricanes Helene and Milton.
