The Clearwater Airpark is one step closer to receiving an added safety measure that's been years in the making.
On Thursday evening, Clearwater City Council unanimously approved a grant agreement between the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the City of Clearwater and FlyUSA, the airpark's manager.
The $110,000 in grant funds will be used toward the construction of a rotating beacon, which helps a pilot to locate an airport during nighttime and in low visibility conditions.
FDOT will pay for 80% of the project, while the city will be responsible for picking up the remainder of the tab. However, FlyUSA agreed to reimburse the city for their costs and expenses.
"It adds an additional layer of visibility to the airport at nighttime and helps our pilots find it and navigate safely to our runway, keeping our airport safe, but more importantly, keeping our neighboring communities safe," Clearwater Airpark General Manager Danny Cooper said.
