Description
Pythiosis is an infectious fungal disease that comes from a water mold-like organism, and it can be deadly to infected pets.
The organism is mostly found in water but can also be found in dirt. Large dogs under six years old are most commonly affected, perhaps because these dogs are most commonly involved in activities in and around water, according to VCA Animal Hospitals.
Experts said high-risk areas include swamps, bayous, or ponds and the most common states affected are bordering the Gulf of Mexico.
The two types of the disease are gastrointestinal and cutaneous.
