After nearly a decade of research and archaeological work, a once-abandoned African American cemetery in Pinellas County was honored with a historic marker on Saturday. “It will be here forever,” said Jacqueline Hayes, whose grandfather is buried in the cemetery. For years, it had no owner; a title simply deeded the land to “the Safety Harbor Colored Community.” After years of research to correct the deeds, a judge in 2021 ruled that the Whispering Souls nonprofit would take ownership of the cemetery.
