U.S. Figure Skating confirmed to WUSA9 early Thursday morning that several members of "our skating community" were aboard American Airlines Flight 5342 that crashed into the Potomac River ─ including athletes, coaches and family members.
Flight 5342 crashed into the Potomac River on Wednesday night near Washington Reagan National Airport after colliding with a military Black Hawk helicopter. The flight from Wichita, Kansas was preparing to land at DCA.
"U.S. Figure Skating can confirm that several members of our skating community were sadly aboard American Airlines Flight 5342, which collided with a helicopter yesterday evening in Washington, D.C." the organization said in a statement to WUSA9. "These athletes, coaches and family members were returning home from National Development Camp held in conjunction with the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas."
