April 30 on The Story: Almost 30 years ago, Oregon became the first state in the U.S. to legalize medical aid in dying for terminally ill patients. The act has been revisited a few times since then, and lawmakers in 2023 lifted restrictions on patients who live out-of-state. But some advocates argue that there are more hurdles that the state should work to take down, prompting another bill in this year's legislative session. At the same time, there's been a long-term trend of prescriptions under the act outpacing actual deaths as a result — and whether that's a good sign or a bad one depends on who you ask.
