Description
With the start of hurricane season on the horizon, the City of St. Petersburg is adding a new line of defense to protect a critical infrastructure site from potential storm surge.
A 9-foot-tall, 500-foot-long Aquafence will be in the city's armory come June to be deployed around a wastewater lift station located near Albert Whitted Airport as needed. The station serves the city’s downtown core and supports major institutions, including Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, making it vital to disaster recovery operations.
“This facility would have been destroyed,” said John Palenchar, the city’s Water Resources Director, referencing last year's storm that came close to inundating the site. “It was lapping at the doors.”
