May 27 on The Story: As Multnomah County continues to grapple with serious budget cuts, the fine details are generating more conflict. One commissioner has proposed deep cuts to the county Office of Sustainability — a tiny agency tasked with steering the county toward climate-friendly outcomes — to pump funding into homeless services. The plan would slash four of the office's five positions, leaving it with just one person to operate, saving some $700,000. Environmental advocates are aghast at the idea, and tonight we're speaking with the commissioner who proposed the idea to ask why she thinks it's worth the sacrifice.
