Description
"Activism without action — just on social media — isn't real activism. We need to move toward action," says volunteer Charle Gomes da Silva, as dozens like him join a beach cleanup activity in Rio de Janeiro to mark World Oceans Day.
As part of the event, volunteers and environmental activists stage a symbolic "ocean hug" and collect microplastics and trash. "The smallest pieces cause the most pollution," says Argentinian volunteer Marina Dale Nogare, who lives in Brazil. "So even if the beach looks clean, I focus on picking up small bits of plastic and polystyrene," she adds. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
