Description
June 5 on The Story: Leaders at the city of Portland are preparing to enact the biggest year-over-year parking fee increase in city history beginning July 1. In downtown, for instance, the cost to park will be $3.60 per hour — up from $2.20 back in 2022. The reason is simple: PBOT's funding is in a hole, and it's not getting any better. The traditional methods for road maintenance funds, things like the gas tax, just don't have the same level of returns they once did. Portland is making more money on parking year after year, but PBOT says it's in deeper trouble than ever. The end result is a road system badly in need of a bailout, and city leaders with nowhere to turn but the pocketbooks of those who park.
