Description
June 4 on The Story: Since February, Portland Fire & Rescue has responded to four calls for homeless women giving birth downtown — more than veteran firefighters have ever seen. Two of those were in April. It's a grim reminder that there are some 7,000 people living unsheltered in Multnomah County, by most recent counts, and life goes on one way or another — though conditions for mother and child can be unsafe. The trauma of carrying a child and going into labor on the street takes an obvious toll on the mothers and their newborns alike, but it has an impact on the first responders as well.
