As the search for two escaped inmates continues and plumbing issues persist at the Orleans Justice Center, Mayor LaToya Cantrell is facing criticism for staying relatively quiet.
While the mayor doesn’t directly oversee the jail — that responsibility falls on the elected sheriff — her limited public appearances in the days following the escape were notable.
'Where’s the Mayor?'
On Wednesday, Attorney General Liz Murrill asked "Where's the mayor?" via X. The answer: Cantrell is attending a conference in Canada and is expected to remain out of town until at least Sunday. But the questions about where she was, began shortly after the escape on Friday, May 16. That afternoon, the city released a joint statement with the New Orleans Police Department around 3 p.m., but Cantrell was not present at any of the multiple press conferences held that day.
