Description
Hurricane Ian has strengthened into a category 4 storm with sustained winds of 140 mph. It's sitting just off the coast of Ft Meyers Florida and will make landfall in SW Florida later today. This will bring surge as high as 12 feet, and wind over 100 mph to the Ft. Meyers area. Ian will also slow down today and tomorrow, so flooding rain will also become an issue for communities across southwest and Central Florida where some spots could top 15 inches of rain. With the current forecast, the Tampa area would miss the worst surge, but rain and gusty winds will still be apparent north of the eye.
The storm will eventually cross into the Atlantic and lift up towards Charleston, SC as a weaker system, but will still produce some surge, rain, and gusty winds for those in the Carolinas.
Elsewhere, no other named storms, with only one area being highlighted by the NHC for possible development, and they have decreased this potential. Most models keep this in the open Atlantic, not a threat to land.
