Description
Fiona is a Category 1 hurricane over eastern Dominican Republic and western Puerto Rico producing catastrophic flooding over Puerto Rico.
Fiona will curve north away from the Dominican Republic on Monday and Tuesday likely as a strengthening hurricane. It could even achieve Category 3 status by Tuesday as it heads north over the western Atlantic around a ridge of high pressure. If it reaches Category 3 with winds of 111-129 mph, it would be the first major hurricane of the Atlantic season.
Elsewhere in the tropics, we have a wave in the subtropics that has a low chance for development, but it won't affect anyone.
Another wave will need to be watched as it enters the Caribbean later this week. We have plenty of time to watch this one, but guidance is trying to spin up something in the Caribbean by this weekend.
There are no tropical threats to southeast Louisiana and the Gulf Coast for the next five days or longer.
