Five people are hospitalized after a vehicle went into a retention pond in West Jefferson on Thursday evening, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Merrill Thompson.
Thompson said troopers were called on a report of a vehicle in a pond near a warehouse on Park West Drive, just off U.S. Route 40, around 6:25 p.m.
Witnesses stated they saw the vehicle traveling westbound in the left lane before slowly driving to the right lane, off the road and into the pond, Thompson said.
The driver was reportedly able to get out of the vehicle, and a trooper was able to rescue one child before the vehicle sank. Thompson said one person was rescued after the car was fully submerged. It is unclear when the remaining two people were taken out the vehicle.
Three people were taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus with "non-life-threatening" injuries.
The other two went into cardiac arrest and were taken to Doctors Hospital, according to Thompson. Their conditions are unknown at this time.
OSHP West Jefferson Post, West Jefferson Police Department, Madison County Sheriff's Office, Jefferson Township Fire and EMS and Prairie Township Fire Department assisted in the water rescue.
Additional details on why the vehicle veered into the retention pond were not provided.
The incident remains under investigation.
