Description
Sirens ring out in Cyprus at 05:20 GMT to mark the anniversary of the July 15, 1974 coup backed by Greece’s then-military junta against Archbishop Makarios III, the first president of the Republic of Cyprus. The coup was followed by a Turkish invasion five days later. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey occupied its northern third in response to a coup orchestrated by a military junta that sought to annex the island to Greece. IMAGES
